Mahakaleshwar Temple: The Heart of Ujjain
Mahakaleshwar is one of India’s 12 Jyotirlingas — the most sacred Shiva shrines — and unique among them in that it is a Dakshinamukhi Lingam (facing south), considered especially powerful. The temple dates to ancient times and was rebuilt in its current form in the 18th century.
The Bhasma Aarti
Mahakaleshwar’s most extraordinary offering is the Bhasma Aarti — performed at 4am, where the lingam is ceremonially anointed with sacred ash (vibhuti) in a ritual that has been performed without interruption for centuries. It is one of the most intensely atmospheric religious experiences in India.
- Bhasma Aarti: 4:00 AM (registration required — book online at mahakaleshwar.nic.in)
- General darshan: 6:00 AM – 11:00 PM
- Best timings: Early morning or late evening to avoid peak crowds
⚠️ Bhasma Aarti registration fills within hours of opening for the next month. Set a calendar reminder for the 1st of each month when new slots open.
