Delhi to Agra: Distance and Overview

The distance from Delhi to Agra is approximately 230 kilometres by road and 200 kilometres by rail. This is India’s most traveled tourist route — millions of visitors make this journey annually to see the Taj Mahal, and the infrastructure reflects that: multiple train services, an excellent expressway, and every form of transport you could want.

Mode Distance Time Best For
By Road (Yamuna Expressway) ~230 km 3–3.5 hrs Self-drive, comfort
By Train (Gatimaan/Shatabdi) ~200 km 1.5–2 hrs Fastest, most comfortable
By Bus (ISBT Sarai Kale Khan) ~230 km 4–5 hrs Budget travelers
By Flight + Transfer ~300 km total 3–4 hrs total Only for time-critical

By Train: The Gatimaan Express — India’s Fastest

The Gatimaan Express (12050) is India’s fastest train and the gold standard for Delhi-Agra travel. It runs between Hazrat Nizamuddin (Delhi) and Agra Cantt in just 1 hour 40 minutes — a remarkable feat for a 200km journey. The train is clean, air-conditioned, and includes complimentary breakfast/lunch.

  • Departure: Hazrat Nizamuddin 8:10am → Agra Cantt 9:50am
  • Return: Agra Cantt 5:50pm → Hazrat Nizamuddin 7:30pm (perfect day trip timing)
  • Fare: Executive Chair Car INR 1,505 | Chair Car INR 755
  • Book: 60 days in advance on IRCTC — this train fills up very fast

The Shatabdi Express (12002) is the second-best option — slightly longer (2 hrs) but equally comfortable and running multiple times daily.

💡 Pro Tip: The Gatimaan Express timings are perfectly designed for a day trip — arrive Agra at 10am, visit the Taj, Agra Fort, and Mehtab Bagh, then catch the 5:50pm return train. One of India’s best-designed day trip options.

By Road: Yamuna Expressway

The 165km Yamuna Expressway (from Noida/Greater Noida) is the fastest road option — 3 hours on a clear day. Combine with the remaining 70km from Delhi to Noida and the total is approximately 230km in 3–3.5 hours. The expressway is six lanes, well-maintained, with service plazas at regular intervals.

⚠️  Do not underestimate Delhi exit traffic. Leaving central Delhi after 9am can add 45–60 minutes before you even reach the expressway. Leave by 7:30am for a comfortable drive.
