Lucknow to Ayodhya: Distance and Overview
The distance from Lucknow to Ayodhya is approximately 135 kilometres by road. The journey takes around 2 to 2.5 hours by car — one of UP’s most convenient pilgrimage day trips. Since the inauguration of the Ram Mandir in January 2024, Ayodhya has seen unprecedented visitor numbers, and Lucknow has emerged as the most natural gateway city for pilgrims.

By Road: Lucknow to Ayodhya via NH27
NH27 connects Lucknow directly to Faizabad (the adjacent town) and Ayodhya. The road is excellent — a four-lane divided highway for most of the stretch, upgraded significantly in preparation for the increased pilgrimage traffic.
- Lucknow → Barabanki (~30km, 35 min) — NH27 begins properly here
- Barabanki → Faizabad (~90km, 1.25 hrs) — smooth, straight highway
- Faizabad → Ayodhya (~5km, 10 min) — the two towns are essentially merged
By Train: Lucknow to Ayodhya
Lucknow Junction (LKO) and Lucknow NER (LKN) both have trains to Ayodhya. The Lucknow Mail, Awadh Express, and several intercity trains stop at Ayodhya Junction or Ayodhya Cantt. Journey time approximately 2 hours.
⚠️ Ayodhya station parking and auto-rickshaw services have been significantly expanded post Ram Mandir inauguration, but the area can still be extremely crowded on weekends and festival days. Allow extra time for the final approach.

💡 Pro Tip: The Ayodhya development project has transformed the city’s approach roads and facilities since 2024. The Ram Path (main processional road) is now beautifully landscaped and leads directly to the temple from the bus stand.
Lucknow Before Departure: 1-Day Layover
Lucknow deserves more than transit treatment. If you have time before heading to Ayodhya, Lucknow’s Bara Imambara (one of the finest Nawabi-era monuments in India, with the remarkable Bhoolbhulaiya labyrinth), the Residency ruins, and the Chowk bazaar make for a rich morning before the drive.
