By Road: NH5 — The Himalayan Drive
The road from Chandigarh climbs through Kalka (the toy train’s starting point, 32km from Chandigarh), then ascends through 102 tunnels and dozens of hairpin bends to reach Shimla at 2,200 metres elevation. The drive through the Shivalik and lower Himalayan ranges is beautiful, and the NH5 road is well-maintained.
Road Route Highlights
- Chandigarh → Kalka (32km, 40 min) — last major petrol station before the hills
- Kalka → Solan (80km from Chandigarh, 1.5 hrs) — enter Himachal Pradesh, apple orchards begin
- Solan → Shimla (~35km, 1 hr) — steepest section, beautiful forest views
⚠️ The Chandigarh–Shimla road gets extremely congested on Friday evenings (Delhi/Chandigarh families heading for the weekend) and Sunday afternoons (returning). Avoid these windows if possible.
The Kalka-Shimla Toy Train: A UNESCO Journey
The Kalka-Shimla Railway was built in 1903 to connect British India’s summer capital to the plains. It runs 96km through 103 tunnels, 864 bridges, and 919 curves — ascending from 656m at Kalka to 2,076m at Shimla. The engineering is extraordinary. The views are extraordinary. And the pace — maximum 25 km/h — is perfectly suited to absorbing them.
