By Road: The Recommended Journey
The road between Jaipur and Udaipur is one of Rajasthan’s great drives. Take NH48 south from Jaipur toward Kishangarh, then NH58 through Beawar, Ajmer, and into the Aravalli-dominated landscape toward Chittorgarh and finally Udaipur.
Essential Stops on the Jaipur–Udaipur Drive
1. Ajmer (145km from Jaipur, 2.5 hrs) — The Dargah Stop
Ajmer is home to the Dargah Sharif of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti — one of the most significant Sufi shrines in the world, visited equally by Muslims, Hindus, and people of all faiths. The Dargah, the adjacent Adhai Din Ka Jhonpra mosque (a 12th-century architectural marvel), and Pushkar Lake (12km further) make Ajmer a worthwhile 2-3 hour stop.
2. Chittorgarh (280km from Jaipur, 4.5 hrs) — Rajasthan’s Most Epic Fort
Chittorgarh Fort is the largest fort in India — a 700-acre hilltop citadel that tells the story of Rajput honor, sacrifice, and the Johar (mass self-immolation) that occurred three times in its history. The Tower of Victory (Vijay Stambha) and the Tower of Fame (Kirti Stambha) are among medieval India’s most remarkable structures. Allow 2–3 hours.
💡 Pro Tip: If you have two days for the Jaipur-Udaipur journey, stop overnight at Chittorgarh — the fort at sunset and in the early morning light is extraordinarily atmospheric, and the evening light-and-sound show brings the history alive.
