The distance from Chandigarh to Manali is approximately 310 kilometres by road. The drive takes 8 to 10 hours depending on traffic, road conditions, and stops. This route is arguably the most beautiful section of the Delhi-Manali journey — from Chandigarh, you almost immediately begin climbing into the Himachal foothills, and the mountains appear within an hour of departure.

The Drive: Stage by Stage
Stage 1: Chandigarh to Bilaspur (~120km, 2.5 hrs)
The drive leaves Chandigarh’s well-planned city roads and transitions quickly into rolling Shivalik hills. Gobind Sagar Lake near Bilaspur — an enormous reservoir created by the Bhakra Dam — comes into view dramatically as you descend toward the lake. The Bilaspur lakeside is worth a 20-minute stop.
Stage 2: Bilaspur to Mandi (~80km, 1.5 hrs)
The road follows the reservoir, then climbs through forested hills to Mandi — the ‘Varanasi of the Hills’ with 81 temples packed into a compact riverside town on the Beas. Mandi is an excellent lunch stop and, for those doing a two-day drive, a natural overnight halt.
- Mandi highlights: Trilokinath Temple, Panchvaktra Temple, riverfront bazaar
- Best lunch in Mandi: Ask locals for the riverside dhabas — the rajma and rice is outstanding
Stage 3: Mandi to Kullu (~55km, 1.5 hrs)
The Beas Valley reveals itself fully between Mandi and Kullu. The river runs broad and turquoise below the road, flanked by mountains that grow progressively higher and more dramatic. Apple orchards appear along the hillsides. This is the stretch where most road-trippers pull over repeatedly for photographs.
Stage 4: Kullu to Manali (~40km, 1 hr)
The final stretch is the most beautiful. The Beas narrows as the valley closes in, and by the time you’re approaching Manali, the peaks are visible above the town — snow-capped year-round. The road enters Old Manali from the north and the journey ends in one of Himachal’s most beloved mountain towns.
💡 Pro Tip: Leave Chandigarh by 7am to reach Manali comfortably by 5–6pm with time for stops. Starting after 9am risks arriving in darkness, which wastes the mountain scenery.
