The Kind of Place That Makes You Forget the Time
I have stayed at Vythiri Village Resort twice. Both times, I arrived intending to catch up on email, make calls, and be productive in a nice setting. Both times, I realized within about six hours that the forest had different plans — and that its plans were significantly better than mine.
Vythiri Village Resort sits in a private forest estate in Wayanad, Kerala — 10 acres of coffee, pepper, and cardamom plantation punctuated by streams, suspension bridges, and treehouses built into the canopy of ancient trees. It’s the kind of place that makes you understand immediately why people use the word ‘retreat’ to describe a stay rather than just ‘holiday.’
The Accommodation — A Genuine Canopy Experience
The Treehouses
The treehouses at Vythiri are the reason most people book. Elevated 30-40 feet into the tree canopy, they are constructed with genuine sensitivity to the trees they inhabit — no nails driven into living wood, no branches removed. Inside, the rooms are properly equipped: en-suite bathroom, air conditioning (for those who need it), comfortable beds, and large windows that face directly into the canopy.
Waking up in a Vythiri treehouse when mist fills the canopy at 6am and a Malabar whistling thrush begins its call somewhere in the trees is one of those experiences that doesn’t need enhancement or activity to justify itself. It’s enough simply to be there.
Other Accommodation Options
Not all rooms are treehouses — the resort also offers forest cottages and plantation bungalows at lower price points. These are comfortable and well-designed but don’t have the canopy elevation that makes the treehouses special. If Vythiri is a special occasion trip, go treehouse. If it’s a regular getaway, the cottages represent excellent value.
The Forest and Activities
Nature Walks
Vythiri’s estate naturalists lead morning walks through the coffee and spice plantation, through patches of natural forest, and along the stream that runs through the property. The walk takes 90 minutes and covers the plantation’s working ecology — how coffee is grown and processed, how pepper is harvested, the relationship between spice cultivation and the forest around it.
Bamboo Rafting
On the Kabani River near the resort, bamboo rafting sessions offer a close encounter with Wayanad’s river ecosystem. This isn’t white-water — it’s a gentle float on traditional bamboo rafts through countryside that has barely changed in a century. Children love it. Adults find it surprisingly meditative.
Tribal Village Visit
With appropriate permissions and community support, the resort facilitates visits to the Kurichiya and Kuruma tribal communities whose traditional lands overlap with the Wayanad forest area. This is handled with genuine respect for community privacy — it’s not a performance for tourists but an interaction between guests and communities that both parties choose.
The Spa and Wellness
Vythiri’s spa uses Ayurvedic traditions specific to Kerala — treatments sourced from local plants, practitioners trained in traditional techniques, and treatment rooms built over the stream so that the sound of flowing water is audible throughout. The standard Ayurvedic treatments (abhyanga, shirodhara) are delivered to an unusually high standard here because the practitioners are local to Kerala and trained in the genuine tradition rather than a commercialized approximation.
Book spa treatments at the time of reservation — they fill up, especially on weekends.
The Food
The restaurant at Vythiri serves a blend of Kerala cuisine and international options, with particular strength in the traditional Kerala meals served on banana leaves — the kind where rice, sambar, rasam, three vegetable preparations, papad, pickle, and a payasam arrive in a specific sequence and eating them in any other order is gently discouraged by the server.
Breakfast in the treehouse — ordered the night before and delivered at your chosen time via a simple pulley system that the resort has used for years — is the correct way to start the day. Fresh idli, filter coffee, and fruit, arriving in a basket at your canopy door at 7am, while the forest wakes up around you.
What Vythiri Gets Right
Most resorts in India that bill themselves as ‘eco-friendly’ use that language as marketing rather than commitment. Vythiri has been operating on genuine environmental principles since its founding — rainwater harvesting, solar power, organic waste management, and a working plantation that employs local workers on sustainable terms.
The resort’s size is also a strength. With limited rooms (under 40), there is never a sense of overcrowding. The breakfast area doesn’t have a queue. The swimming pool is never packed. The naturalist walks have genuine intimacy. This is a direct consequence of the decision to stay small, which is itself a values choice.
